Yugoslav Army Tank Parked in Front of FC Red Star Stadium

The T-55 tank which used to belong to the Yugoslav National Army (JNA) has been parked in front of the North Stand of the stadium of Red Star Belgrade football club on Monday evening, ahead of the home match for the qualification for the Champions League between Red Star and Young Boys from Bern.

According to Vecernje Novosti on Tuesday, the website of Red Star fans announced that the tank will permanently remain there as a symbol.

The T55 allegedly dates from the „ wartime period from the early nineties“ and is not functional, and according to the fans website „fans have launched the slogan saying that the Red Star machine has been put to work and that the tank will serve as a symbol to their chant“.

Croatian Jutarnji list described this occurrence as a „morbid provocation“ stating that in the past, Red Star fans used the tank motive to combine it with a banner containing the Cyrillic letters “Vukovar” on it, N1 reports.

Namely, the T55 was also used during the siege of that Croatian town on the Danube which (is it a coincidence?) had begun precisely during the last week of August of 1991.

In a telephone statement to N1 television, Sports director of Red Star Belgrade Mitar Mrkela declined commenting whether the club is behind the presence of the tank and the club general manager Zvezdan Terzic did not provide any clarification either.

According to unofficial sources, Novosti reports that the tank was donated to fans by a „company that deals in this kind of business“ and that it was shipped by a tow truck and lifted by a crane.
