A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hits the Philippines

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has struck the second largest island of the Philippines, Mindanao. The BBC reports that a pregnant woman has died, four people have been injured and nine others are missing. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said 529 families have been affected. The US Geological Survey measured the first tremor on Saturday evening at a magnitude of 7.6, followed by four large aftershocks exceeding 6.0.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.4 and recorded at least 600 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 1.4 to 6.2.

People in several towns not far from the epicenter of the earthquake were seen rushing out of buildings and standing in open areas. In Butuan City, patients were evacuated from a hospital. In the municipality of Hinatuan, about 21 km from the epicenter, the crowd gathered in the evacuation centers. Disaster officials there are inspecting villages for damage and casualties.
