Abbas Araghchi is proposed as the foreign minister of Iran

Abbas Araghchi, Iran's former negotiator on nuclear issues, a Western-educated diplomat, has been nominated for the position of Iran's foreign minister.

The nomination was made by the reformist president of this country, Masud Pezeshkian.

The president has presented this name to Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly, and this body now has two weeks to analyze the list submitted by the president, and then make a decision.

Araghchi, 61 years old, has been Iran's chief negotiator for the nuclear talks, held between Iran and world powers in the period 2013-2021.

He has also served as Iran's envoy to Estonia, Finland and Japan.

Araghchi has been the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry during the presidency of Hassan Rouhani, who has been heavily criticized by Iranian hardliners for the reforms he has aimed to implement during his eight years in power.

Araghchi has held the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2013./REL
