Antarctica can no longer claim to be the only continent without Covid-19.

The last continent has already registered cases of Covid-19, after the Spanish language media confirmed that there were 36 cases related to one of the Antarctic military and research bases.

According to 'The Guardian' 26 Chilean army personnel and 10 maintenance workers at the Chilean Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme base in Antarctica have tested positive for the virus. Affected individuals are no longer in Antarctica and are now isolated in Punta Arenas, Chile.

The infections were reportedly discovered after a Navy ship made a voyage to the base in early December. Three crew members on a vessel providing support for the base were also tested positive. They had returned from their mission in Antarctica, the report said.

In an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19, all major research projects in Antarctica have been halted, reports The Guardian.
