Barcelona will increase the tourist tax

Barcelona plans to increase the tourist tax for cruise ship and ferry passengers staying in the city for less than 12 hours, Mayor Jaume Collboni said in an interview with El Pais newspaper.

"We will propose a significant tax increase for cruise ship passengers," Collboni said.

This measure is added to a series of measures he has announced to reduce the impact of mass tourism.

The decision comes just weeks after protesters in Barcelona sprayed foreign visitors with water during a demonstration, chanting: "Tourists, go back where you came from."

Barcelona wants fewer tourists who pay more According to the Statista agency, last year Barcelona registered the largest number of cruise passengers, approximately 3.6 million passengers.

The current tourist tax for cruise passengers stopping in Barcelona was €7 per day. Collboni did not say how much he would increase the tourist tax, but his reasons are clear.

"Cruiser passengers who make a stopover of less than 12 hours have an intensive use of public space without any benefit for the city and a sense of occupation and saturation," he said.

"We want to have tourism that respects the destination," added Collboni.

Collboni announced last month that Barcelona's city administration will stop renting out apartments to tourists starting in 2028. Collboni has also imposed other tourist taxes./DW
