The conservatives and their center-left SPD partners had agreed on the date.

On Wednesday, conservative Friedrich Merz and leaders of Germany's center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) swiftly finalized a coalition agreement.

The agreement came amid growing pressure on German politicians to quickly form a new government capable of addressing the significant challenges posed by US President Donald Trump's trade war and threats from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
