After concerns about school incidents, government doubles security officer

The Council of Ministers has approved a new decision to strengthen security measures in pre-university educational institutions, making changes to the Council of Ministers Decision No. 600, dated 9.10.2018, which defines the public security service in schools.

According to the latest decision, high schools, vocational high schools and other pre-university education institutions that have over 900 students will have 2 security officers, instead of just one officer as was the case before.

It has also been determined that:

Gymnasiums, vocational secondary schools and oriented schools with over 80 students will have at least 1 security officer;
Basic or combined schools with over 350 students will also have 1 security officer;
Vocational schools with over 700 students will be equipped with 2 security officers. The
list of institutions that benefit from this service will be determined by order of the Minister of Education, while for vocational institutions the decisions will be taken jointly with the minister responsible for vocational training.

The decision emphasizes that public safety service consists of active monitoring by security officers, through continuous cooperation with students, educational staff and the community.

The amendments also provide that expenses for security officers will be covered from the funds of the approved budget for the Ministry of Education and Sports, while for vocational education – from the funds of the Ministry of Vocational Education and Training.

With this decision, the government aims to strengthen preventive measures and ensure a safer environment for students in schools, following recently reported cases of violence and other disturbing incidents in educational settings.
