Six migrants drown trying to reach Spain's Canary Islands

At least six migrants have died trying to reach Spain's Canary Islands in unsafe boats from West Africa, emergency services and the Red Cross said on Wednesday.

Five of the 65 migrants who arrived on the small island of El Hierro overnight in an open boat have been found dead, emergency services said.

Another immigrant was found dead in one of three other boats rescued by the Spanish coast guard.

For the second time in a row, the number of immigrants going to Spain's Canary Islands saw a record increase in 2024.

The number of migrants who go missing or die during the journey is growing five times faster than the number of those arriving alive, the latest data shows.

Sailing across the Atlantic is particularly dangerous, as bad weather can easily sink the fragile boats and dinghies that immigrants mostly use.

Around 20,000 irregular migrants have arrived on El Hierro so far this year, according to the Red Cross./ REL
