The former police director is found dead

Former NYPD Chief Roy T. Richter has passed away, sources confirmed to DailyMail.com on Wednesday.

Richter, 56, was found dead at his Westchester home, sources said.

The Westchester Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Richter died by suicide from an intra-oral gunshot wound.

"Roy Richter was a consummate professional, highly respected at every rank in the NYPD and beyond," said a law enforcement union official.

“His positive impact on the lives of thousands of police officers during his leadership of the union will always be his legacy. He will be greatly missed.'

Richter served the NYPD for 33 years before retiring in January 2020 as Deputy Inspector of the License Division.
