Lost vote of confidence, Romanian government collapses

Romania's government has been ousted after a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Florin Citu was approved by a large majority in parliament.

The motion was approved by 281 votes, well over the 234 requested, with Citu National Liberal Party (CNL) MPs boycotting the vote.

It was filed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) after a previous no-confidence motion by the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) was blocked.

Both parties were backed by former PNL coalition partners, the centrist USD Plus, who clashed with the government over the dismissal of Justice Minister Stelian Ion on September 2nd.

Citu, 49, was appointed less than a year ago but has been criticized for tackling the COVID-19 crisis.

Romania is currently the second worst vaccinated country in Europe.
