Accused of illegal possession of a weapon, Hunter Biden pleads not guilty

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has pleaded not guilty to charges of illegal gun possession in a Delaware court.

Prosecutors allege Biden lied about his drug use on application forms when he bought the gun in 2018. Biden has admitted he was a cocaine user at the time but denies breaking the law.

He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the three federal charges. The charges can also lead to fines of up to $750,000 (£621,000).

Biden did not speak during the brief trial, except to acknowledge the charges against him and his rights as a defendant.

The plea was entered on his behalf by his attorney, Abbe Lowell. In a statement afterward, Lowell said he believes the charges are the result of "political pressure" from right-wing Republicans.

While no date has been set for the trial to begin, prosecutors and Mr. Biden's defense team have been given 30 days to file any preliminary motions they may have.
