Mariupol Mayor: Over 5,000 Ukrainians have been killed so far by Russian forces

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol says more than 5,000 civilians have been killed during the month-long Russian blockade.

Vadym Boichenko said Wednesday that 210 of the dead were children. He said Russian forces bombed hospitals.

Boichenko said more than 90% of the city's infrastructure had been destroyed by Russian bombing.

The Russian military has surrounded the strategic Azov Sea port, cutting off supplies of food, water and energy and hitting it with artillery and air strikes.

The capture of the city would allow Russia to secure a continuous land corridor on the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia took from Ukraine in 2014.
