Trump: Crimea will stay with Russia, Zelenskyy knows this

US President Donald Trump has declared that the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014, "will stay with Russia." His comments were made during an interview with Time magazine, conducted on Tuesday and published today.

"Zelenskyy understands this, and everyone understands that the peninsula has been with them (Russia) for a long time," Trump said, referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to him, efforts to return Crimea to Ukrainian control are futile and only prolong the conflict.

Trump has also accused the Ukrainian president of refusing to negotiate with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, saying this has contributed to prolonging the war.

Crimea, a strategic region along the Black Sea in southern Ukraine, was invaded and annexed by Russia in 2014, during President Barack Obama's term, well ahead of the launch of a full-scale invasion in 2022.

“They’ve had their submarines there for many years before any period that we’re talking about. The people speak mostly Russian in Crimea,” Trump stressed. “But it was given by Obama. It wasn’t given by Trump.”

These statements risk further straining the American stance on the conflict in Ukraine, while Trump himself aims to return to the White House in the November 2024 elections.
