DP's program for medicine/ Alimehmeti: Healthcare needs urgent reforms

Leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, held a meeting today with medical students, where doctor Ilir Alimehmeti also delivered a speech.

Alimehmeti stressed that it is necessary to take urgent measures to improve working conditions for doctors and for greater support for the training of young professionals, who, according to him, are forced to seek opportunities abroad due to low salaries and difficult working conditions.

He also emphasized the importance of increasing the number of doctors and creating better opportunities for professional advancement within the country.

His statements:

It is very clear where the DP Program is focused, which is oriented towards people. In healthcare, it has made us live for people and for other people, from you in the future. We know very well where the problem started, from you who speak behind you is the in-depth study done for years why young Albanians do not train and emigrate when they train in healthcare.

First of all, we need doctors because in many areas there are no doctors at all, or there are fewer than necessary. The opening of a second faculty and the training of doctors by the DP said that the number of doctors who will enter will double. Who will teach them? We double the students, but have the number of halls and classes doubled, where will they stay? Have the number of laboratories doubled? But where is the quality going?

Secondly, none of these young people enter medicine to leave, but to serve people. But they leave for three reasons: economic, the lowest salaries in Europe, and our program has a doubling of salaries.

Secondly, there is the lack of professional growth; I guarantee you that in the past 5 years, over 60% of specialists enter on free quotas and are practically not paid at all. Unpaid work and as a result, they leave. And the third case is social dignity; doctors and nurses are not holding their heads high like they used to.

Remember that law, another slave-owning law, the obligation to work where I want? Why? Create the right terrain and people go and work on their own, return on their own.

We have a plan for how to achieve these three points and in the end it is the return of the brain. The DP has a special department to return the 'brain' to Albania.
