Canada's new prime minister is expected to announce a snap election

Canada's new prime minister is expected to announce a snap election

Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce on Sunday the holding of a snap parliamentary election on April 28, a government source told AFP on Thursday.

Justin Trudeau's successor, who took office last week, is leading a minority government and seeking to win a majority in Parliament with his Liberal Party, at a time when the country has been rocked by tensions with the United States.

The ruling Liberal Party is relying on Carney's experience as a central banker to reassure Canadians in the face of a tariff war with the United States that threatens to shake the economy.

The 60-year-old Carney, with no experience in politics and who has never served as an MP or minister, is being called upon to campaign under the shadow of Trump's threats.

The US president, who started a trade war with his neighbor by imposing tariffs, continues to repeat that "the only logical thing for Canada to do would be to join the US."

Trump's threats have dominated the Canadian political scene for weeks and are expected to be at the center of the upcoming election campaign.
