Plastic pollution can be reduced by 80% by recycling and reusing

Plastic pollution could be reduced by 80 percent by 2040 if countries and companies design policies and make changes to markets, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has said.

To get to that point, the UN has said that more work needs to be done on the reuse, recycling and reorientation of plastic products.

According to UN experts, this means that governments should promote refillable bottles and take-back schemes for plastic products.

Among other things, they have said that plastic pollution can be reduced, even if recycling becomes more sustainable and profitable.

The executive head of UNEP, Inger Andersen, has said that the way we produce, use and dispose of plastic is polluting ecosystems, creating risks for human health and destabilizing the climate.

The report of this agency, which talks about ways to end the use of plastic, has been published after a second round of negotiations in Paris, where the global trend to combat plastic pollution has been analysed.

According to the agency, changing policies on plastic use could create over 700,000 jobs by 2040, mostly in low-income countries.

Plastic products have been found in almost every corner of the world, including Antarctica.

Earlier this year, scientists identified the first disease caused by plastic in birds.

Called plasticosis, this disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract./REL
