Following the death of a patient, Austria suspends the use of AstraZeneca

The Austrian Health Agency has announced today the temporary suspension of vaccination with AstraZenneca, after a 49-year-old woman lost her life, while a 35-year-old developed pulmonary embolism and is in the process of recovery.

"As a precaution, the remaining reserves of the vaccine group will not be used for vaccination," authorities said.

Authorities say the blood clot is not among the known side effects of the vaccine, although investigations are under way into any possible links.

Austrian authorities have suspended inoculations with a series of AstraZeneca vaccines as a precautionary measure while investigating the death of the woman and the severe symptoms of another after doses.

The Federal Office for Health and Safety has received two reports from the same AstraZeneca vaccine group at the Zwettl district clinic in the province of Lower Austria.

Austrian media report that both women were nurses working at the clinic in Zeettl.

AstraZeneca on the other hand had stated that the company was in contact with the Austrian authorities and would fully support the investigation. They noted that the vaccine was approved by the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization based on a global clinical program involving 23,000 volunteers.

European Union regulators approved the product on January 30, saying it was effective and safe to use.
