After Trump, Argentina also says it will withdraw from the WHO

Following the new US president, the president of Argentina has also announced that he will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

"President Javier Miel instructed Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein to withdraw Argentina's participation in the World Health Organization," presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said at a press conference on Wednesday.

"We Argentines will not allow an international organization to interfere with our sovereignty, much less our health," he added.

Adorni said Argentina's decision was based on "profound differences regarding ... health management, especially during the pandemic that ... led us to the longest lockdown in human history and the lack of independence in the face of the political influence of some states."

A statement later issued by Argentina's presidential office accused the WHO of causing economic damage during the Covid-19 pandemic with "endless quarantines".

Trump, whom Milley considers an ideological ally, announced on his first day back in the White House in January that he was withdrawing the United States from the WHO, prompting criticism from public health experts.

Similarly, Trump criticized the United Nations health agency in his executive order on January 20, citing its “mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic that emerged from Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, its failure to enact urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from undue political influence by WHO member states.”
