Bashar al Assad's government falls, Syrian rebels declare Damascus

Syrian rebel forces claim to have "liberated" Damascus after their surprise offensive that swept the country in just a few days. "Militarily, Damascus has fallen," a source familiar with the situation told CNN .

Rebels said Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad has fled Damascus, but Syria's presidential office and Iranian officials previously claimed he had not left the capital.

Scenes of celebration have been reported in many places. Syria's prime minister said in a recorded message that the government was ready to "cooperate with any leadership that the people choose." He was seen in a video being escorted by rebels.

Meanwhile, a US official told CNN that the events in Syria mark the collapse of "Iran's artificiality" across the Middle East. The possible overthrow of the Iranian-backed Assad would follow the destruction of key proxies for Tehran, Hezbollah and Hamas in conflicts with Israel over the past 14 months.
