Scholz in Moldova, the war in Ukraine in the focus of the talks

The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is on August 21 in Moldova, the former Soviet republic that borders Ukraine, and feels threatened by the invasion launched by Russia against the neighboring country. Scholz will meet with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the Prime Minister of Moldova, DorinRecean, in Chisinau.

The talks will mainly focus on the impact of Russia's war on Ukraine in this small country of 2.6 million people. The government of Moldova, which aims to join the European Union, has accused Russia of disinformation and destabilization. Since the 1990s, Russian soldiers have been stationed in the breakaway region of Transnistria, a narrow strip of land in the east of the Republic.

Scholz visited Moldova last year as part of a European summit. However, this visit is the first bilateral visit that a German chancellor has made to this country in the last 12 years.

Germany has supported Moldova's security sector with over 41 million euros since 2018, according to the German Government. Berlin is the fifth largest donor to Moldova, which is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Like Ukraine, Moldova is a candidate country for EU membership from 2022.

Voters in Moldova on October 20 will vote in the presidential elections. Citizens will also vote in a referendum on whether the state should join the EU, so that this goal is included in the Constitution./ REL
