Scholz unexpected visit to Kiev, shares new military aid to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday to reaffirm Berlin's support for Kiev as it fights Russian aggression. He has pledged to provide Ukraine with additional military aid worth 650 million euros, and has said the weapons will reach Kiev by the end of the year.

"I traveled by train to Kiev through the night, to a country that has been defending itself against Russian aggression for more than 1,000 days ," Scholz said in a post on X - the platform formerly known as Twitter.

He said in a statement that "Ukraine has defended itself heroically against Russia's aggressive war".

"Through my return here to Kiev, I want to express my solidarity with Ukraine," said Scholz, who faces new elections in February.

"I want to make it clear from here that Germany will remain the biggest European supporter of Ukraine."

He said that "Ukraine can rely on Germany". This visit was made just a few weeks after Scholz was harshly criticized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

This phone call took place at a time of speculation about what the new American leadership, which starts work in January, will mean for Ukraine. The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine. The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions. As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
