Secretary of State Rubio takes office as USAID director

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Monday that he has taken office as the director of USAID, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Rubio told reporters that he "delegated that authority to someone, but I stay in touch with him," without giving details. The previous acting USAID administrator was Jason Gray. CNN asked the State Department if that was the person Rubio was referring to.

While in El Salvador on his trip to Central America, Rubio argued that USAID is "a completely irresponsible agency."

“Our goal was to go in and align our foreign assistance with the national interest. But if you go mission after mission and embassy after embassy around the world, you will often find that in many cases USAID is involved in programs that are at odds with what we are trying to do in our national strategy with that country. This cannot continue ,” Rubio said.

The move comes after Elon Musk, the world's richest man tasked with regulating the federal government, said President Donald Trump had signed off on the agency's closure.

Lawmakers and aid workers have been preparing for Trump to completely shut down the agency and place it under the State Department umbrella.
