US asks China to stop Iran from closing Strait of Hormuz

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on China to prevent Iran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping lanes.

His comments came after Iranian state broadcaster Press TV reported that parliament had approved a plan to close the Strait, but added that the final decision rests with the Supreme National Security Council.

"I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call Iran about this, because they depend heavily on the Strait of Hormuz for their oil.

"If they close the Straits, it would be economic suicide for them. And we have the ability to deal with this, but other countries should also consider this. It would hurt other countries' economies much worse than ours," Rubio said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

Any disruption to oil supplies would have profound consequences for the economy. China in particular is the world's largest buyer of Iranian oil and has a close relationship with Tehran.

Oil prices rose after the US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, with the price of Brent crude hitting its highest level in five months.
