Tensions between Iran and Israel, EU: Region stuck between war and ceasefires

The Middle East is "stuck in phases of fragile peace talks and ceasefires," the EU's top foreign policy official said today after Iran and Israel exchanged attacks in the worst outbreak of violence since an April ceasefire took effect.

"Tehran's drones continue to threaten maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz," Kaja Kallas posted on X. "The ministers were clear that Iran's actions are unacceptable."

In response, Kallas said EU member states sanctioned the Iranians for restricting maritime traffic in the critical waterway, which Tehran has effectively closed since the outbreak of war in February.

Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also called on Iran and Israel to "show restraint and de-escalate immediately".

“The resumption of conflict between Iran and Israel is in no one’s interest,” Cooper wrote in X. “Negotiations must continue toward a lasting solution that we all need, for peace and stability in the region and for the full restoration of global trade.”
