The European Commission has expressed concern over US President Donald Trump's announcement that the US will withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Trump has issued an executive order on his first day back in the White House to begin the process of withdrawing the US from the WHO, for the second time in less than five years, AP reports.

"If we want to be resilient to global health threats, we need global cooperation in the field of health," said EU Commission spokeswoman Eva Hrncirova during a press conference in Brussels.

"We believe that the US administration will take all of this into account before formal withdrawal," she added.

Trump made a similar move in 2020, but President Joe Biden reversed it in 2021.

Many scientists fear that this move could undo decades of gains made in fighting infectious diseases such as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

Experts have also warned that withdrawing from the organization could weaken the world's defenses against dangerous new outbreaks capable of causing pandemics.

"I think there is no better example than the COVID pandemic. We have learned our lesson. We have seen that the virus does not stop at the border and that we need global cooperation in the field of health," Hrncirova added.
