Ukraine confirms that Luhansk has fallen into the hands of the Russians

Ukraine's military command confirmed tonight that the country's forces had withdrawn from the contested town of Lysychansk.

"Continuing to defend the city would lead to fatal consequences," he said.

"To preserve the lives of the Ukrainian defenders, a decision was made to withdraw," the social media statement added.

The confirmation from defense forces comes after Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that the city has been "liberated" and that Moscow is in "full control" earlier in the day. Russian media showed footage of Luhansk militia fighters marching through the streets, waving flags and cheering.
