Iranian nuclear weapons scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh has been killed near the capital, Tehran. The news was confirmed by the country's Ministry of Defense, reports BBC.

Fakhrizadeh died at the hospital after an attack in Absard, Damavand district. He was otherwise referred to as the "father of the Iranian bomb" by diplomats. Iranian news agencies said the aggressors targeted his car with a bomb before firing in his direction.

The news of the killing comes amid new concerns about the increased amount of enriched uranium Iran is producing. Enriched uranium is a vital component for both civilian nuclear power generation and military nuclear weapons.
Iran insists its nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes. Between 2010 and 2012, four Iranian nuclear scientists were killed and Iran has accused Israel of collaborating in the killings. Fakhrizadeh's name was specifically mentioned in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's presentation on Iran's nuclear program in May 2018.
