At least 13 people have died in a fire in a nightclub in the southeastern city of Murcia.

The fire broke out at the Fonda Milagros club in the Atalayas area at around 06:00 local time (04:00 GMT).

Emergency services are looking for missing persons in the bar. They have warned that the number of victims may still rise.

Diego Seral, of the national police, told Spanish television channel RTE that the whereabouts of the 15 people were still unknown. He had previously said that "significant structural damage" caused the nightclub to collapse.

According to La Verdad de Murcia newspaper, a 28-year-old woman, who has not been found, sent a voice message to her mother when the fire started, saying: "Mom, I love you, we're going to die. "

She had gone out with her partner and some friends from the nearby town of Caravaca de la Cruz.

Firefighters finally got into the building around 8 a.m. and discovered four bodies, then two more about 40 minutes later. They continued to find bodies while searching the premises of Fonda Milagros.
