"Religion and trusts", Rama: Europe has not been good at keeping
Prime Minister Edi Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama has given an interview for the show "Global Conversation" on Euronews Europe. He spoke about Albania's path to the EU, the importance of this process and the idea of changing the borders in the Balkans. He said that the opening of negotiations is not easy, but according to him, this should have been done several years ago. The reason, according to Rama, that the EU did not open negotiations with Albania was the internal 'problems' in the European Council.

"It is very difficult to say, very difficult because we had to take this step a few years ago and again and again. But it did not happen… because of the internal dynamics in the European Council and ojmë we hope this will be the case. "But it is not easy" , said Rama.

The latter added that Europe for Albania is not an objective or political destination, but a religion and a trust. Rama has again expressed dissatisfaction with the EU, saying that it has not been so good at keeping promises.

"It always has as much meaning as it had the first day. Albanians never tire of fighting to be part of Europe. Of course, the disappointments have been ongoing and Europe has not been good at keeping its promises. We have done our homework and we will continue to do it because, as I said, for us Europe is what it has been since the first day we came out of communism and this is our first time in history that we we can choose. "We never had the opportunity to choose, others decided for us and our country was in other spaces, but not in the space we always wanted, which is Europe, the European Union" , said Rama.

Asked about the extension of the accession process for the Western Balkans and its return to a 'battlefield' for foreign powers, Rama said: "Not being fully integrated into the European Union, the Western Balkans remain a gray area that offers attraction. and opportunities for other actors tret third actors who do not have the same benign approach and the same values and principles that the European Union offers.

Rama also commented on the unofficial document circulated in Brussels, which defends the idea of redefining the borders of the Western Balkans. In this regard, he reiterated that Regional Schengen can serve to strengthen cooperation.

"My position is very simple. As long as we, and when I say 'we' I mean all the actors, the players - the European Union, the United States, the players in the region - will not overturn the status quo with a very open and clear approach, the frustrations will be present and will appear from the funniest ideas to the strangest ideas. Because the status quo is not an option.

While we have deep disagreements to resolve we must agree not to agree on them, but at the same time we must push together to strengthen our cooperation, to create in the region a functional Schengen area with all "Europe's freedoms ," the prime minister said.
