The next court hearing against the former mayor of Kukës Safet Gjici, who requested to stay at home due to health conditions, was held in the Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction Elbasan.
The former mayor of Kukës is sentenced for passive corruption and abuse of office. In his request to judge Suela Lika, the defense lawyer relied on article 59/a point C of the Criminal Code, according to which a convicted person who has less than 2 years left in prison can stay at home due to the condition health.
Safet Gjici, sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment, still has 1 year and 2 months of remaining sentence to pay, meanwhile he is currently hospitalized in a private hospital.
According to the lawyer, the former mayor of Kukes suffers from problems of the cardiovascular system, enlargement of the aorta and severe form of diabetes. The lawyer says that Gjici has suffered from these problems before, but the difficult psychological condition in prison has also aggravated his health condition.
