The new justice as in the time of Teme Sejko

The new justice as in the time of Teme Sejko

By Abi Malltezi

Landi was a good man and a worker at detention center 313. He was in prison for 21 months and he did not know yet how many months or years he would be kept in prison. It helped someone to bring the food ration on his behalf since there were no people to visit him from Tepelena. Landi was from a village in Tepelene and lived in difficult conditions. His wife had left him and he was raising his 4-year-old daughter with difficulty and poverty. Until one day when a police van came to his house and arrested him as part of a structured criminal group with some 50 people for cannabis. Landi says that the one who came and arrested him was the crime boss who was known throughout Tepelene as the biggest keeper of all hash plots in 2016-2017.

They took him because he was supposedly going to sign a document and brought him directly to Tirana, did you say he was the biggest hashish criminal in Albania. You told the police that you had a 4-year-old daughter, for whom there was no one to take care of, that your wife had left her, and invited the police to the house to see the miserable conditions, but they assumed that "we know about those things". Landi says that he thought it was all a misunderstanding and that when the prosecutor saw that he didn't know anyone and had nothing to do with the traffic, he would release him within 2 days to return home where the little girl who stayed with her grandparents was waiting for him. But the prosecutor made more than 50 people as a structured criminal group because he needed as many as possible for statistical effect, because most of them did not even know each other. They reminded me of the story of the one who accused him of being part of Teme Sejko's hostile group, and the man replied "yes, please tell me if Temja is a woman or a man."

That's how Landi got to know in custody many of those who had fallen for being part of the structured criminal group. The poor land had no money to pay a lawyer, so the judge dismissed for corruption, Irena Gjoka, assigned him an amount from the state from what she finds. Irena Gjoka, as the prosecutor's notary, left them all in prison and for many weeks did not even reveal the decision, although according to the law she had to reveal it for 2 days so that they could appeal. Landi's lawyer - appointed by Irena - of course did not take her to the court to request the annulment of the measure for Irene's illegality, which seems to her above the law, because they told her that she is the president of the new justice court.

Landi believes that this matter was elaborated to hide the real traffic heads by making some scapegoats just for statistics. The SPAK prosecutor has not yet clarified who exactly are the members of the structured group and the roles of each in this story. This is required by law, but the new justice considers the law an unimportant technicality. What is even more serious is that 7 judges of GJKKO have resigned from this case without any facts. Left without judges, now they are taking judges from the districts to be part of the trial, which Landi thinks is illegal. He thinks that when SPAK prosecutors put pressure on him and use GJKKO judges as notaries, these district judges threaten him even more easily. Landi still does not have a clear accusation about what role he played in the hypothetical group that made millions of euros in drugs, but that Landi did not even have money to pay his lawyer and was working in prison. Meanwhile, his daughter is 6 years old and can't wait to talk on the phone, while her father can't even tell her what stage the trial is in.

Landi expects justice and his eyes fill with tears when he talks about the girl. But this new justice was quite expensive, focused more on statistics than on facts, and which kept him in custody for 21 months without even starting the hearings. And Landi feels like Kafka's character waiting at the Gate of Law. And you hear in the news that the new Justice is acting and that it is a great success. Vec Landi and his 6-year-old daughter do not understand success for you.
