"I will run in Durrës", Floriana Garo: From the world of television to political battles. The challenges of a young woman for a better Albania
" Albania is the country of my heart ," said the Member of the Presidency and Spokesperson of the Democratic Party and former "Miss World Albania 2012", Floriana Garo, who left America and Switzerland to "embrace" her country despite the Albanian reality.
Beautiful and charming, Garo has had a very successful journey as a student and volleyball player in the USA, to continue in the world of television, as a presenter and moderator, and now a well-known political figure of the Democratic Party.
Asked by Politiko.al what it's like to be a woman in politics, Garo said it's difficult in an environment known as male-dominated and harsh, but she took it positively.
The former Miss does not hesitate to be grateful to her husband as she says: For a woman who is a mother, the balance between family and work is not easy. There must be a supportive and very confident man to accept a woman in this field more easily.
Always down to earth, the DP spokesperson, when asked about her political ambition, states that at this moment she will run in her city, Durrës, while continuing that she does not know what will happen later, as she does not make long-term plans.
" The Challenges of the Pulpit, January 8. I was unaccustomed to such battles, with tear gas in protests, but they have been extraordinary lessons for me ," this is the moment that Garo describes as the most difficult in his political career.
Simple and appreciative, the former Miss states that parties are open to women, although there are still reservations about their role in terms of real decision-making.
" When the iron women of Albanian politics tell me their experiences in very difficult times of transition, amidst bullets and unusual conditions, I say that now, for someone who is likable and determined, it is much simpler ," Garo tells Politiko.al.
The Democratic Party spokesperson calls on citizens not to take things for granted, but to truly evaluate what is best for the country.
Garo says that only a good economy will heal the wounds of depopulation and provide a hopeful future for those who live here and encouragement for those who have left to return.
With the positivity that characterizes her, Garo shows support for any girl or woman who intends to enter politics: You will always have my support! If you want to contribute, do not hesitate.
Full interview
You lived in the diaspora for 12 years, what was it like to re-encounter Albania? Seeing the changes, the situations?
Deri ku shkon ambicia juaj politike?
GARO: Sfidat e Foltores, 8 Janari.
Politics has more intense times like campaigns and quieter times, so I've adapted.
How do you see the future of women in Albanian politics? Are there more opportunities for women to reach leadership positions?
GARO : Times have changed. Now there are more spaces and more opportunities. Parties are open to women, although I still have reservations about their role in terms of real decision-making.
When the iron women of Albanian politics tell me their experiences in very difficult times of transition, amidst bullets and unusual conditions, I say that now, for someone who is likable and determined, it is much simpler.
Do you have any calls for the 2025 elections?
GARO : The more women and young people become aware of the alternatives in Albanian politics! They should not take things for granted, but should truly evaluate what is best for the country.
Who has the ability to bring about real change and overthrow this narco-state? Small parties, no matter how unproven, cannot do it. The Democratic Party will focus on the well-being of citizens. This is our solemn promise.
Only a good economy will heal the wounds of depopulation and provide a future with hope for those who live here and encouragement for those who have left to return. Albanians should enjoy the wonderful Albania, because for them, it has become unaffordable. This will end!
A message to all women and girls who intend to enter politics.
GARO : The Democratic Party has its doors open. We are a party of dignity and free people.
Think carefully about getting involved, be yourself, and take every step with courage.
You will always have my support! If you want to contribute, don't hesitate!
