Greece/ Albanian sentenced to 11.3 years in prison for gang rape of Swedish

The Court of Appeal in Crete has sentenced a 48-year-old Albanian man to 11.3 years in prison after being found guilty of theft, rape, violence against police officers and illegal entry into the country.

The defendant denied the charges against him, except for theft, but did not convince the court.

He will serve his sentence in Grevena prison, where he has been held since his arrest in 2021.

The case began to unravel on August 17, 2021, when a couple of Irish tourists went to Platanias beach to swim at night.

But after they emerged from the sea, shortly after 01:00, they discovered that an iPhone, a wallet, and a watch worth 500 euros had been stolen from their bag.

Using the other iPhone, which the girl had on her, the tracking app was activated and at a nearby location the couple spotted the defendant along with another associate who was holding the phone, while his watch was later found.

As revealed by the police investigation, the 48-year-old had also participated in the gang rape of a Swedish tourist a few days before stealing the phone, an event that occurred on August 11 of that year, just before 01:00, again on Platanias beach.

At the hearing, which lasted approximately 4 hours, witness statements were read, while two police officers testified in person.
