"I've only cried twice in my life", Liçaj on the Theater: Not even the invaders do what the government did

"I've only cried twice in my life", Liçaj on the Theater:

Actor Neritan Liçaj has described the collapse of the National Theater as an unprecedented event in the history of humanity, emphasizing that there is no other case where parliament, government, police, and business have united to violently destroy their own theater, in an unconstitutional manner.

In a strong statement about Floriana Garon in 'Elelvate', Liçaj asks the question: "Tell me another case where this happened? Where?"

He also brings up Russia as a comparison, noting that even Vladimir Putin, although an invader, bombed the theater, but then rebuilt it as it was. "While for us, they destroyed it," he says.

According to Liçaj, the demolition of the National Theater was a personal obsession of the prime minister. "It was stuck in his head: I've been wanting to demolish it for 20 years," the actor says.

He recalls the long resistance of artists and citizens, emphasizing that the Theater's cause was the only protest that the government was unable to defeat through political means.

"We entered 'Guinness' for 2 and a half years every day and 9 months, 24 hours there. All other protests were extinguished, this was the only resistance that did not give in. That is why violence was used," he declares.

Liçaj also speaks about the personal pain this event has caused him, showing that the collapse of the National Theater has deeply affected him emotionally. "I cried endlessly. Even my sister said it: I saw my brother crying twice — once when his father died and the other time for the Theater," the actor recounts.

Neritan Liçaj's statements bring to attention the still open wound of the collapse of the National Theater, an event that continues to be considered by many artists and citizens as an act of institutional violence against culture, history, and democracy.
