Kathimerini: The Albanian court delays the decision on Beler's oath request

The Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime in Albania has postponed to December 11 the review of the request of Fredi Beleri, the elected mayor of Himara, currently in custody, who requests permission to swear in the municipal council.

According to the Greek media Kathimerini , representatives of the prison administration claimed that Beler's request should be rejected as it is not based on legislation, while Beler's lawyers argued that this right is protected by the country's Constitution.

Present at the session was the Greek ambassador to Albania, Konstantina Kamitsi. Beleri was arrested two days before the May 14 elections on charges of vote buying.

Athens has warned that it will block Albania's EU membership path if the Balkan country does not respect the rights of the ethnic Greek official.
