The leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, has called on the Albanian government to declare the Vjosa River a National Park and to abandon the construction of hydropower plants.

According to him, Vjosa is not only national but also European wealth and heritage.

"Wonderful canyons, rapid and unimpeded flows, unique ecosystem and 1,100 species that take refuge in it make the Vjosa the most special river in Europe," Kurti said.

The latter emphasizes that despite the demands of the residents, the commitment of the activists and the resolution of the European Parliament to declare Vjosa a national park, nothing has been done yet. He also adds that it is time for Kosovo and Albania to protect the natural resources that have remained undamaged.

"Just like in Albania, in Kosovo the governments, despite public objections and protests of the residents, have put constant pressure for the construction of hydropower plants. In complete violation of the legislation in force, the governments in Kosovo have enabled the construction of small hydropower plants by demolishing "Such short-term investments for rapid individual material benefits, without taking into account the long-term ecological damage and negative impacts on the well-being of communities, will no longer be made ," Kurti wrote on Facebook.
