The Assembly approves the RTSH Steering Council, Fatjon Hoxhalli elected

The Albanian Parliament has approved the members and the head of the Board of Directors of the Albanian Radio Television (RTSH), after a session held last week. The candidacies submitted by the Media Commission, after the hearing, were approved by a majority vote.

The new composition of the RTSH Steering Council will include 10 members: Petrit Beci, Rajmonda Bulku, Osman Mula, Bujar Kapexhiu, Robert Budina, Enio Civici, Alket Braho, Lorenc Vangjeli, Pano Xhixho and Zamira Kita. They were proposed according to a joint formula, where 5 members came from the majority and 5 others from the opposition.

Osman Mula received the most votes, winning 84 votes in favor, while Pano Xhixho received 82 votes in favor. Meanwhile, Rajmonda Bulku and Robert Budina received the most votes against, 7 and 11, respectively, with Budina receiving even more abstentions (9).

In the race for the chairman of the Steering Council, Fatjon Hoxhalli won with 74 votes in favor, while his rival, Helidon Haliti, received only 10 votes in favor. Hoxhalli will replace Leka Bungo in this post, and currently holds positions as an advisor to the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party and previously served as an advisor for the media in the Government.

Criticism from media freedom activists has been raised, as some of the candidacies have close ties to politics, including positions held in the Government or parties. The RTSH Steering Council was dismissed by the Parliament on 17 February due to ongoing legal violations during the competition process for the new RTSH director.

The members approved in this Council will play an important role in directing RTSH policies in the future.
