Nuri: Ballot paper challenges in the upcoming elections

Lawyer Franc Nuri has highlighted an important issue regarding electoral developments in Albania, analyzing the situation of coalitions and political entities.

The lawyer, invited this morning to "Kafe Shqeto", pointed out the fact that many political parties have been registered in our country, which have subsequently joined coalitions, leading to a reduction in the number of entities on the ballot.

Nuri stated that the DP, for example, has formed a coalition with 26 entities and removed some of those that would compete on their own, in order to avoid an overly crowded ballot, which could have become even larger than what we have today.

He also emphasized that this ballot is extremely large, with a length of 58.3 cm, and that it is important to note that this is a consequence of recent changes to the Electoral Code, which provides for the open ranking of candidates by first and last name.

Full statement:

The fact that we have dozens of parties in Albania, many political parties were registered as entities and then some of these parties were gathered into coalitions, which led to the reduction of the number of coalition entities.

The DP, by forming a coalition with 26 entities, removed several entities that were competing on their own, could have been on the ballot, and would add even more, making the ballot a gigantic one, even bigger than this one.

I want to give a precision, the dimensions are exactly 58.3 cm and this is important because we asked the CEC last week if this ballot paper with these dimensions would fit in the ballot box, in the isolation room when you vote. Its dimensions from a technical point of view, the space it allows is 60 cm and it can be unfolded inside that box and you can vote as a voter without having to fold the ballot paper.

It is of extremely large proportions, but it is the circumstances that dictated it, because for the first time the Electoral Code has provided that the order of the open list of candidates be first name and last name, which has resulted in a ballot in Tirana with 407 names on the open list, not counting those on the closed list.
