World Health Organization data shows that hemorrhage – which occurs mainly during or after childbirth – is responsible for almost a third (27%) of maternal mortality. Deaths due to hypertensive disorders are next at 16%.

As for our country, the figures show a very low mortality rate for this cause, and from year to year the numbers have been decreasing.

According to the white shirts, this is related to the control and awareness of women and girls to be followed up with a specialist before, during and after birth, as well as access to white shirts.

"After '90, the deaths of pregnant women were high, while today we have the lowest figures in the region. Hypertension or prolapse is the most serious pathology we have in obstetrics, or during pregnancy."

And prolapse is being observed to have an increasing incidence due to many factors, from the increase in obesity, to the increase in pregnancy at an older age or at a very early age.

"The key to success is to start treatment in the first steps. We have almost zero mortality among women from hypertension in pregnancy, only in cases where they do not see a doctor," said Dr. Demaliaj.

However, the WHO report highlights that around a third of women – mainly in lower-income countries – still do not receive essential postnatal check-ups in the first few days after giving birth.
