Kosovo security expert Bedri Elezi has shared a touching story about a Kosovo citizen who, after 12 years of imprisonment in Syria, has finally managed to contact his family. The incident dates back to 2012, when the Kosovar had attempted to flee the Bashar al-Assad regime. In an attempt to escape, he had jumped from a high bridge, breaking his legs, before being arrested and sent to prison.

Elezi, in an interview with Euronews Albania, explained that this person, a resident of the Hani i Elezit Municipality, spent 12 years isolated in a harsh prison in Sinaia, without any possibility of communication with his family. His release was possible after the prison he was in fell under the control of Syrian rebels.

"On Sunday, after his release, he managed to contact his family and assured them that he is safe and well. He is eagerly awaiting the conditions to be created for him to return to Kosovo," said Elezi.

The expert also detailed the story of this person, explaining that 12 years ago, in an attempt to escape Assad's forces, he had jumped from a high bridge and when he fell, he broke his legs. He was then captured and placed in prison, and his family has had no information about his fate since then.

"He is from the Municipality of Hani i Elezit and had gone to Syria in 2012. In fact, I had communicated with his family and told them that he was in prison in Sinai and that he was alive. It was hard to believe us, and we even had cases where family members opposed us, saying to be careful that we had no information about our relative. This person spent 12 years in prison and in an attempt to escape Assad's forces, he had jumped from a high bridge and when he fell, he broke his legs and they had caught him and put him in prison and his family had no information about his fate and this Sunday he spoke to his family and told them that he was healthy and well," said expert Elezi.

He stated that there are about 60 citizens of the Republic of Kosovo who are in areas that were under Assad's control and who are family members.

"We have around 60 citizens of the Republic of Kosovo who are in areas that were under Assad's control, who are family members. I even remember we had an effort with Haradinaj's Foreign Ministry to repatriate them, and as part of these efforts, they had waited for about two months in a city near the border with Turkey to enter Turkey and then find a way to be repatriated, but it was impossible and they are still in Syria," said Elezi.
