Global Skills Report 2025, the 'alarm' that Albania should also hear

As the global job market transforms at an incredible speed, driven by technologies like generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), companies and professionals are facing a pressing need: continuous skills development.

Udemy's latest report, "2025 Global Learning & Skills Trends," emphasizes that only those who invest in new skills and adapt to technology will remain competitive.

Although Albania is not directly mentioned in the report, the global context it reflects is more relevant than ever for our country. With a young workforce, but often untrained according to market needs, Albania faces the great challenge of preparing for tomorrow – a tomorrow dominated by digital transformation, the demand for technical knowledge and professional flexibility.

In this context, Albania is taking steps to improve its vocational education and training (VET) system to adapt to labor market demands and technological advancements. The Skills Development for Employability Program 2023–2027, supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), aims to strengthen institutional capacities and create closer links between vocational education and the private sector.

This program includes reforms in the legal framework, the development of financing mechanisms for skills development, and the promotion of cooperation between public institutions and the private sector to ensure that training programs are in line with market needs.

However, challenges remain. A recent report from the OECD shows that Albania ranks last in the region in terms of digital skills, with only 23.8% of individuals possessing basic or more advanced digital skills, compared to the EU average of 53.9%. This points to the urgent need to integrate digital skills into educational curricula and to provide specialized training to increase the competitiveness of the Albanian workforce.

To address this, another report highlights the need to review vocational education curricula in Albania to include STEM technologies and create stronger links with the private sector. This will ensure that young people are prepared for the job market, especially in the digital and technology sectors./ Monitor
