This is the country with the highest road accident death rate in the EU

Bulgaria tops the list of European countries with the most road accident fatalities, according to the latest data published by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and analyzed by the Swiss platform Vignetteswitzerland, specializing in the Swiss e-vignette market.

According to the report, Bulgaria recorded 81.6 deaths per million inhabitants, which represents a figure 78% higher than the EU average of 45.5 deaths per million inhabitants. Romania follows with an equally alarming rate – 81.1 deaths per million, also 78% above the average, while in 2023 1,545 road accident fatalities are reported in this country.

Serbia ranks third with 75.7 deaths per million inhabitants (65% above the EU average), closely followed by Latvia with 75.4, Croatia with 71.2, and Portugal with 60.2, all significantly above the European average.

In stark contrast, Norway is ranked as the safest country on European roads, with just 20 deaths per million inhabitants – less than half the EU average. Norway has managed to reduce traffic fatalities by 41% compared to 2013.

Vignetteswitzerland CEO Mattijs Wijnmalen commented that despite the progress of recent decades, “no country has achieved the target of reducing road deaths by 50%, while some have even seen rates increase compared to 2013.”

He added that the aim of the analysis was to better understand which countries are making progress in road safety and which still have much to improve.
