Albania faces the risk of war, expert Softa in Politiko: Iran-Israel, an escalation that could also affect security in the Balkans

Security expert Fatjon Softa has commented on the recent developments between Iran and Israel, describing them as a serious escalation that could directly affect security in the Balkans and Albania.

During an interview with Politiko.al, expert Softa said that the Iranian attack with advanced technology ballistic missiles - including the Fattah-1 and Kheibar Shekan supersonic missiles - on Israel is a clear signal that the Middle East region is entering a critical phase of conflict. 

Despite Israel's advanced defenses through the "Iron Dome," ballistic missiles are very difficult to intercept and have caused real damage.

"This is a delicate moment for global security. The risk of escalation is higher than ever," Softa said, also citing Iran's warnings to strike US bases in the region and maps identifying 'enemy' states.

In this context, the expert evaluates the evacuation of Albanian citizens from Israel as positive, comparing it to the reactions of Western countries.

 However, it raises major concerns about the real preparedness of the Albanian state in the event of a larger crisis.

"Albania has no state food reserves, no shelter for the population, and has limited capacities in emergency management. The only reliable defense remains NATO, but even this is untested in a real war situation," he emphasizes.

Moreover, the Balkans, according to Softa, could be a suitable terrain for Iran's hybrid activities: "The risk of activation of the agency, cybercrimes or unrest stimulated by radicalized elements is real."

In conclusion, the expert calls on the Albanian authorities to seriously assess the situation, taking measures to strengthen national security and increase resilience in the face of international crises that could directly affect the country.

1. How do you read Iran's attack on Israel? Are we facing an irreversible escalation in the Middle East?

EXPERT : The situation in this conflict is critical. Israel's attack on uranium enrichment sites, scientists involved in the war industry, and the top military leadership produced consequences and an immediate response from Iran. This Iranian attack with supersonic missiles tested the capabilities of the Iron Dome, Israel's very expensive defensive shield. Although a large part of the missiles were detected and eliminated, the remnants and some missiles that penetrated caused material and human damage in Israel.

Zyrtarët ushtarakë izraelitë kanë theksuar vazhdimisht se asnjë mburojë nuk është plotësisht e padëpërtueshme, madje as Kupola e Hekurt, e teknologjisë më të avancuar, nuk mund të përshkruhet si “hermetike” dhe e papërshkueshme.

Sulmi iranian u bazua në raketa balistike të avancuara me rreze të mesme veprimi. Këto raketa fluturojnë shumë lart dhe kthehen në Tokë me shpejtësi supersonike, duke i bërë ato shumë më të vështira për t’u kapur nga mbrojtja antiraketore. Raportet e mediave ndërkombëtare tregojnë se Teherani përdori në këtë sulm raketat balistike supersonike Fattah-1 dhe Kheibar Shekan.

Kjo situatë mund të ndërlikohet më tej, dhe rreziku i përshkallëzimit apo i zgjerimit të konfliktit e bën edhe më serioze dinamikën aktuale.

Deklaratat e Iranit për mundësinë e goditjes së bazave amerikane në rajon, si dhe publikimi i një harte me shtete të konsideruara si "armike" dhe të rrezikuara për t'u sulmuar, e shtojnë ndjeshëm tensionin dhe pasigurinë në shkallë globale.

2. Shqipëria evakuoi disa qytetarë nga Izraeli pas tensioneve. Çfarë mesazhi jep ky veprim për sigurinë rajonale dhe për përgatitjen e shtetit shqiptar në situata krize ndërkombëtare?

EKSPERTI: Shqipëria evakuoi disa shtetas nga Izraeli, dhe ky është një hap për t’u përgëzuar, pasi ndjek modelin e vendeve të tjera perëndimore që evakuojnë stafet diplomatike dhe qytetarët për t’i mbrojtur në situata të rrezikshme.

Megjithatë, Shqipëria përballet me sfida serioze në rastet kur mund të bëhet objektiv i kërcënimeve nga Irani, si anëtare e NATO-s, por edhe si një vend i cilësuar “armik” nga Teherani, për shkak të strehimit të opozitës iraniane në Manzë. Po ashtu, vendi ka qenë më parë objekt i sulmeve të mëdha kibernetike ndaj infrastrukturës së tij kritike digjitale, duke ekspozuar mangësi të dukshme në siguri.

Në rast të një përfshirjeje në një konflikt ushtarak apo përballjeje me një krizë të rëndë, Shqipëria nuk ka rezerva shtetërore ushqimore, nuk disponon strehime për popullsinë dhe ka mangësi të mëdha në teknologji dhe burime njerëzore në fushën e mbrojtjes. 

Edhe për emergjencat civile, vendi përballet me vështirësi, siç është vërejtur gjatë zjarreve në sezonin e verës, ku shpeshherë mbështetja vjen nga vendet fqinje përmes avionëve apo helikopterëve.

E vetmja shpresë reale mbetet mbështetja e NATO-s, por edhe kjo, në rastin e një konflikti të drejtpërdrejtë, mbetet e paprovuar në aspektin e efektivitetit dhe kohës së reagimit.

3. Ka pasur paralajmërime për ndikim të Iranit edhe në rajonin tonë, përmes lidhjeve të fshehta apo aktiviteteve hibride. A përbën Ballkani një terren i përshtatshëm për rrjete të influencës iraniane, dhe a duhet të shqetësohet Shqipëria në këtë kontekst?"

EXPERT : Iran is a state that supports and finances international terrorism. There is a real risk that it will activate its agents — recruited and indoctrinated individuals — who could cause unrest or commit cybercrimes.

This frontal war with Israel cannot be won by Iran, as Israel is a superior military power, supported by advanced technology and strong alliances, especially with the US.

 The latter aim to overthrow Iran's political system and force it to abandon plans to build nuclear weapons — if they have already been produced.

Another serious threat to regional stability is Pakistan, a state that already possesses nuclear weapons and represents a flashpoint in the event of global escalation.

Albania must assess the situation and the risk very seriously if the conflict gets out of control, as the consequences could be real and direct for national security and for elements of the country's critical infrastructure. / Prepared by NETA FERO
