European Commission proposes complete ban on Russian gas imports

The European Commission today proposed a complete ban on Russian gas imports into the European Union by the end of 2027. The European Union has reduced its exposure to Russia in recent years following Moscow's war in Ukraine.

"Russia has repeatedly tried to blackmail us by using its energy supplies as a weapon. We have taken clear steps to turn off the tap and end the era of Russian fossil fuels in Europe forever," Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.

According to its statement, the remaining volumes of Russian gas can now be gradually removed without significant economic impact or supply risks thanks to the availability of sufficient alternative suppliers on the global gas market.

The Commission said a legislative proposal had been submitted – to end Russian gas imports into the bloc.
