Trump's tariffs could bring Putin closer to peace

Trump's tariffs could bring Putin closer to peace

Vladimir Putin is showing "absolutely no sign" of wanting a ceasefire but could be forced to the negotiating table if Donald Trump changes his tactics, says the former head of the British Army's chemical weapons unit.

Speaking to presenter Leah Boleto, Hamish de Bretton-Gordon says the recent Russian attacks across Ukraine prove the Russian leader has no interest in ending the war.

But he adds that if Trump were to impose tariffs on Russia, especially on its oil, it could bring Putin closer to a possible peace deal.

"He seems to charge everyone else," De Bretton-Gordon says, writes Sky News.

“But if oil, which is the basis of Putin’s economy and is allowing him to continue to fight, falls to a price where he can no longer do that and Trump has the ability to do it, then these are things that Americans can do.

"I think this would bring Putin to the negotiating table. But for now he's happy to fight, because he thinks he's winning."
