Russia's security chief lashes out at the West: Nuclear threats are growing

A senior Russian security official warned on Thursday of the growing threat of nuclear war and attacked a German minister for threatening Russian President Vladimir Putin with arrest, saying such a move would amount to a declaration of war and cause a Russian attack on Germany.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, chaired by Putin, said in comments to reporters that Russia's relations with the West have reached an all-time low, AP reports .

Asked if the threat of a nuclear conflict has eased, Medvedev replied: "No, it has not decreased, it has increased. Every day that they give Ukraine foreign weapons brings the nuclear apocalypse closer."

Medvedev has issued a flurry of such strong statements in the past, criticizing the US and its NATO allies for what he described as their efforts to destroy and destroy Russia.

In Thursday's comments, Medvedev denounced as legally invalid the International Criminal Court's decision to issue an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of alleged involvement in the abduction of thousands of children from Ukraine.
