The toxic waste scandal, Mustafaj: How the office failed under Balluk, it should have informed the host state
The former Foreign Minister, Besnik Mustafaj, has commented on the scandal of the export of toxic waste from Albania to Asia. During an interview in News24, Mustafaj emphasized that the exported waste is products from filtration that contain zinc and that serve as raw material for another industry.
According to him, the Kurum company has sold this waste legally, and there is no violation in terms of sale in the Albanian territory.
He clarified that for the export of toxic waste there is a special procedure that includes an office, which must notify the host country if it will accept this waste, an office which is under the responsibility of the Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku. In this case, according to Mustafaj, this approval was avoided, which constitutes a violation of the rules.
Mustafaj strongly criticized the relevant institutions, stressing that only the customs that depend on the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Infrastructure, as well as the Ministry of the Environment, were included. He has accused the government of trying to shift the blame onto the manufacturer and avoid responsibility.
In this context, he demanded accountability from the prime minister, stressing that in a democratic country, the government could face serious consequences for the failure of three state structures that did not function properly.
