Tirana has the highest number of illiterates, 36% are in the 10-49 age group

Illiteracy is also present in the 'heart' of Albania, as 1/5 of people who do not know how to write or sing in the whole country are in the district of Tirana. According to the detailed data of the Census, after Tirana, Elbasan and Fieri are the other two counties with the highest number of illiterates.

Counties with the highest number of illiterates:

Tirana – 9,627

Elbasan – 6 215

Fieri – 6,063

"In the district of Tirana there are about 9,600 illiterate people, most of them are in the municipality of Tirana, followed by Kamza, Kavaja, Vora and Rrogozhina. About 36% of those who cannot read and write are in the 10-49 age group."

However, illiteracy in the capital has decreased. This is because 1.4% of the population of Tirana district is illiterate, from 1.9% that was in 2011 (when there were 12,587 illiterates), TV Klan reports.
