The Kosovo special arrests the former mayor of Malishev Municipality

The Office of the Specialized Prosecutor (ZPS) announced on Friday that it has arrested the former mayor of the Municipality of Malisheva, Isni Kilaj, on suspicion of obstruction of justice.

In a media release late Friday, the SPS said he was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the Specialized Prosecutor.

"Kilaj was arrested for criminal offenses against the administration of justice, including obstructing official persons in the performance of official duties within the meaning of Article 401 of the Criminal Code of Kosovo... and violation of the secrecy of proceedings," the announcement states.

The ZPS added that he has been transferred to the detention facility of the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo in The Hague, Netherlands, and that he will appear before the judge of the preliminary procedure of the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo "without unnecessary delay".

His arrest comes a day after the SPS announced on Thursday that it was conducting ongoing operations in Kosovo in an investigative process focusing on criminal offenses against obstruction of justice.

Kilaj led Malisheva in two mandates, from 2007 to 2009 and from 2009 to 2013.

In 2015, the Assembly of Kosovo approved the Law on the Special Court, which operates under the laws of Kosovo, but on the territory of the Netherlands. Foreign prosecutors and judges work in this institution.

The Specialized Chambers and the Specialized Prosecutor's Office investigate alleged crimes committed by members of the Kosovo Liberation Army against ethnic minorities and political rivals from January 1998 to December 2000.

Currently, several court cases are underway at the Specialized Chambers, including the case against the former leaders of the KLA - Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi - who are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity./REL
