Interview/ Ted Kopliku, the vision of a young candidate: I seek to build bridges, not walls. Youth? Needs a "shake"

Ted Kopliku, a new candidate for MP in the May 11, 2025 elections, has recounted his political journey, motivations, and vision for the future of Albania.

With a 20-year commitment to the Democratic Party and a deep passion for politics, the 34-year-old candidate, listed on the open list in the Shkodra district, reveals in an interview with Politiko.al the reasons that prompted him to run, the challenges he intends to face and the priorities he will address if he secures the votes for the deputy's mandate.

After competing in the Primary process, where he came out among the most voted, he is now unveiling a new representation model for another challenge.

With a deep commitment to the principles of freedom, meritocracy, and the rule of law, Kopliku says he aims to bring a new approach to politics, by building bridges of communication and offering concrete solutions to return to Shkodra, as he himself says, the greatness that this city deserves.

How did the proposal to run for MP come about? Who made the proposal to you?

Hello, thank you for the interview! In fact, the proposals were made through the base, as a start to become part of the Primary race! It was a logical flow of my political activity for years and especially the last three years. In the primary, I came out the most voted by young people, crossing the threshold set as a limit, but also among 33 candidates, I came out 4th in the Municipality of Shkodra.

I am absolutely grateful to every member for the appreciation given to me. Then there was the leadership of the DP, which announced the candidacies, where today I am part of the open list of ASHM in the May 11 elections.

What motivated you to run under the DP logo in the May 11, 2025 elections?

My commitment to the DP is 20 years old. I have more life in the DP than outside of it. I have never had another logo and the Democratic Party constitutes the only real possibility for rotation, which also constitutes my political goal today as a citizen.

I come from a right-wing family and I am convinced through my experiences, education and journey that the right is the solution. I was born in 1991, at the dawn of democracy.

I am convinced that politics in general is the most powerful instrument of change everywhere, for better or worse.

In Albania even more so, because we are a country with deeply political and only political problems. This change can come through a political force that returns to its fundamental principles: freedom, merit, the rule of law and human dignity.

What do you think sets you apart from other new candidates and why should citizens trust you with their votes?

Pasioni për politikën. Jetoj me politikën prej vitesh. Mendoj që më dallon fort gjithashtu ndershmëria e trashguar dhe e brumosur thellë ne karakterin tim.

E di që duket fjalë klishe dhe jashtë mode, por shembulli jem më i madh në jetë janë prindërit e mi. Nuk ka qënë kurrë në jetën time synim që të futem në parti për t'u punësuar, sikurse fatkeqësisht është mendësia e shumë të rinjve sot në kampin tjetër.

Pasioni e serioziteti besoj janë cilësi që pasqyrohen në aktivitetin tim dhe jam i sigurt që janë dy elementët që votuesit do vlerësojnë më shumë. Besoj dhe shpresoj që vota e 2025 do jetë mbështetje për modelin e ri në politikë: një të djathti të pakompleksuar dhe të çliruar nga propaganda që ka tentuar ta asgjësojë atë.

Si do të përballeni me sfidat e politikës tradicionale dhe si do të sillni një qasje të re?

Politika aktuale në vendin tonë përballet me një sërë sfidash të thella: duhet ta pranoj që edhe PD ka sfidat e veta.

Si kandidat për deputet, unë jam i vetëdijshëm që ndryshimi nuk vjen vetëm nga fjalët, por nga qasja dhe përkushtimi i përditshëm. Unë synoj të sjell një qasje të re që bazohet në tre shtylla: afërsi me qytetarin, transparencë në veprim dhe politika me ndikim real.

Kërkoj të ndërtoj ura, jo mure. Kam për qëllim të sjell një model të ri përfaqësimi, ku angazhimi politik ndërtohet nëpërmjet propozimit, jo konstatimit.

Nëpërmjet rrugëdaljes jo komenteve. Nëpërmjet fitores pavarësisht rregullave, deri sa ndryshimi i rregullave të jetë i mundur.

A mendoni se politika shqiptare ka nevojë për një "shkundje" nga të rinjtë?

E kam thënë gjithmonë që konflikti mes të vjetres dhe të rinjve është një konflikt artificial. E vërtetë që ne sjellim energji, ide të reja, kurajo për të sfiduar status quonë dhe një mënyrë më të ndershme për të parë shërbimin publik, por në fund të ditës ne jemi një rini që kemi zgjedhur emigrimin, jo përballjen. Më shumë se politika shqiptare, të rinjtë vetë kanë nevojë të shkunden.

Unë kam vendosur të kandidoj pikërisht sepse besoj se Shqipëria ka nevojë për një model të ri, me shumë se sa një brez të ri përfaqësuesish. Të rinjtë duhet të kenë vend në tryezat e vendimmarrjes, të jenë ajtorë të vërtetë, jo vetëm makiazh dhe kontributor për uljen e moshës mesatare.

Ndryshimi nuk vjen duke pritur , por vjen duke u përfshirë. Patjetër që politika ka nevojë për modele të reja dhe më shumë se te shkundja, besoj tek proçeset.

Mendoj se në PD po ndodh një proçes i tillë. Tre vitet e fundit në veçanti dhe 12 vitet e fundit në përgjithësi, kanë krijuar një brez të ri politikanësh gati për të shkundur kundërshtarin. Idealistë dhe të pa kompleksuar.

Si do të përballeni me presionet nga brenda partisë për të ndjekur linjën tradicionale?

What pressures? In Brain Gain we have living proof that in the DP young people are given the opportunity to do politics. Politics in general is a balance of power and in the same logic as what I wrote above: "play by the rules of the other, until you can change them". For every line you want to follow, in a political party, you have to aim and have many others behind you to make it happen.

What is your vision for young people in Albania and how do you plan to realize it, given that this age group has left the country or intends to leave soon?

I envision a country where young people do not dream of leaving, but rather stay and build their lives with dignity. If we do not give young people strong reasons to believe in the future of their country, we will not have long-term development, regardless of investments or reforms.

I am one of those who chose to return, but above all to make Albania our home.

I am convinced that there are dozens and hundreds like me, so we need the model that goes to parliament. The model that I mentioned. All of us can make Albania our home!  

What are the three main priorities you will address if elected?

Full confidence in the vote of the citizens of Shkodra. My three main priorities will be:

1. Economic development and employment for young people. This would make it possible for you to come to Shkodra not only as a tourist, but to have the opportunity to build your future in this city.

2. Dignified education and public services, with meritocracy as the only ally. The University of Shkodra should become a regional center of study and form generations that serve the city and a point of reference for our neighbors or other cities.

3. Restoring security and returning the state to its institutional track will guarantee the creation of a business climate and new development opportunities.

These three points are, in my opinion, the biggest problems in our city. Focusing on these three directions would restore the greatness to my city, the eternal Shkodra that citizens miss in all dimensions/ Politiko.al/
